Attitude

“Attitude” is the most personal and the rawest song in Jo Newfarmer’s catalogue. It begins with a letter: “My daughter wrote a letter to me”. What follows are her words about living with the highs and lows of mental illness — the days when she feels she could rule the sky, and the days when she is so low that nothing seems left. She is honest about the cost: losing control, meeting the wrong people, hurting the ones she holds dear, and hiding in drugs and alcohol just to stop the thinking for a while.

The song compares that cycle to “a snake that eats its tail”, but it doesn’t end in despair. In the last verse she says she wants to change the spinning wheel and find “a new and steady track”. Set in A minor, the music stays sober and serious so the words can speak. Like all of Jo’s songs, it was born from real life and the stories of his own family, with one message for anyone in the same situation: you are not alone in this.
