The story behind “Didn't We Learn”
“Didn’t We Learn” is Jo Newfarmer’s protest song against war. It opens with sirens on broken streets and children who draw tanks instead of dreams, and then travels across today’s conflicts — from Ukraine to Sudan, Congo and Yemen. After every war the world built memorials and promised “never again”, yet the song asks why history keeps repeating itself: “We study the past in black and white, then repeat the horror in real life.”
The bridge looks beyond borders and flags: “Maybe the enemy was never a land, maybe it lives in the heart of man.” And it ends with the simplest, hardest question of all, asked by a child at night: why do grown-ups love to fight? It is a song of compassion for the innocent people who pay the price, and it connects to Jo’s open support for Ukraine. Written and produced by Jo Newfarmer, “Didn’t We Learn” was released on 1 July 2026 and is played in C major.
